Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic Sokoto is a state-owned polytechnic located in Gwiwa, Sokoto State, formerly known as The Polytechnic Sokoto before it was changed to the current name it bears.
Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic Sokoto has a long history filled with ups and downs, starting from the initial establishment of the polytechnic in 2002, which came as a result of Sokoto State not having access to tertiary technical education due to the former institution that was owned by the state being taken over by the state and removed from Sokoto State during the creation of more states in Nigeria.
The creation of Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic Sokoto was mainly contributed to by the fact that the former polytechnic owned by the state, which was located in Birnin Kebbi and Talata Mafara, was lost to Kebbi and Zamfara states in 1991 and 1996.
The establishment of the polytechnic was facilitated quickly due to the wise administration of merging two higher learning institutions, which include Haliru College of Arts and Science and Sani Abacha College of Administration, together and upgrading them together.
The polytechnic kicked off in 2001 under the first rector of the institution, Dr. Abubakar Umar Dikko, with five colleges operating at that time; the polytechnic college has increased to seven colleges.
The changing of the institution name came in 2016 when the institution name was changed from the Polytechnic Sokoto to the Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic Sokoto in honor of Alhaji Umaru Ali Shinkafi (Marafan Sokoto).
Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic Sokoto is driven by its main objective of providing courses of study and practical practice in engineering and others. The institution offers courses in the ND program and also the HND program; also included is its certificate program.
Unlike other polytechnics, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto, made history by doing what other polytechnics are not known for, and that is conducting convocation, and this was done more than twice in the institution; the second convocation was conducted in 2014.

Admission Requirements
Umaru Ali sokoto state has offered admission with the following requirement.
● Candidate must have 5 credit passes in their O-level subjects in WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB. In not more than two sittings
● Candidate must sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
● Candidates who applied for the direct entry for HND must have OND with at least one year of working experience.
