Schools will remain shut in Oyo state until security improves- NUT. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has said public schools in the state will remain closed until the government puts adequate security measures in place to guarantee the safety of teachers and students.

The union had directed teachers to embark on an indefinite strike following the abduction of over 40 students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, as well as the killing of two teachers during the security crisis.

Speaking in Ibadan, the NUT Secretary, Olukayode Salami, said schools may reopen once the government secures the release of the abducted victims and implements effective measures to prevent similar incidents.

According to him, the worsening insecurity has created fear and psychological distress among teachers and learners, while some parents have also withdrawn their children from school due to safety concerns.

Salami disclosed that the union and other stakeholders have held meetings with government officials and submitted action plans aimed at addressing the security challenges. He added that the union is awaiting the implementation of those measures before reviewing its decision.

The NUT also called for increased security patrols, intelligence gathering, and the deployment of joint security teams involving conventional security agencies, hunters, and vigilante groups, particularly in vulnerable communities.

The union stressed that schools must remain safe environments for learning and urged the government to treat the matter as a priority in the interest of education and public safety.
