10 Ways To Remain Fit As A Teacher

Living a healthy and fit life doesn’t cost much and isn’t as hard as people make it look like, It also isn’t going to be as easy as it would require dedication, consistency and most of all patience.

Remember, It takes about 28 days to form a habit and a healthy habit keeps the needle away from your butt. As a teacher, you are either in your office or in the classroom standing and talking, and you need all the stamina you can get to do that daily. Managing a large classroom is extra stress for all teachers. So you have to do everything possible to be healthy and fit outside of the classroom.

10 ways to remain Fit as a Teacher.

Like they say, health is wealth and taking care of your health as a lecturer or instructor is good business, so why not invest in your health. Lots of teachers have collapsed in front of the class while teaching students, because they were unhealthy and unfit. Here are 10 ways to remain Fit as a Teacher.

  1. Do lots of chores

Doing house chores like washing the dishes, mobbing the house and cooking burns a alot more calories than you’d think and it doesn’t take up much of your time or interfere with work so you won’t notice you’re shedding some serious weight.

So rather than shy away from house chores when you are at home after standing in front of the class for hours, you should do as much chores as you can daily to stay healthy and fit before resting.

2. Exercise often

Even if it’s just to go for a walk down the street before going to the school, or walking to the school if it is close by, a couple of press ups, push ups and dancing. Registering at a gym nearby isn’t such a bad idea if you have the money and you can always go there during the weekend or in the evening when you are back from work.

3. Stay hydrated

It is recommend by health experts to drink at least 3 litres of water daily to keep the body hydrated. It also flushes out toxins and also helps blood circulation in the body. Teachers do a lot of talking which obviously makes them dehydrated, so how about having a bottle of water and drinking it every 10 minutes while teaching.

4. Don’t skip breakfast

Teachers do this very often because they wake up as early as the students, and have to be in school before the students. They tend to skip breakfast and will rather opt for brunch. But we all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so you should start each day very early with a healthy meal, a balanced diet that consists of whole grains, protein, vegetables and lots of fruits. Basically, it should have at least one from the five groups of foods which are:

  • Vegetables.
  • Fruits.
  • Grain (cereal) foods, mostly wholegrain and/or high cereal fibre varieties.
  • Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, beans.
  • Milk, yoghurt cheese and/or alternatives, mostly reduced fat.

5. Get a fitness partner/trainer

Ever heard of the saying two heads are better than one ? Well, it is true. Going through the journey of living a healthy and fit life as a teacher might get boring without a partner to motivate and encourage you, so get a family member who is also working towards health and fitness goals with you so both of you can workout together or get a personal trainer.

6. Talk to your doctor

Doctors are actually in the right position to tell you what to eat if you want to gain some weight or what not to eat if you want to lose weight. There are various weight loss and weight gain supplements out there but you should check with your doctor to know if they are right for you before you use them.

7. Get enough sleep

Most of us know that getting the necessary 8 hours of good night rest or 10 hours of a total day test is important to our health but we don’t make it a priority. Especially teachers, they would rather organize lessons in the afternoon to make extra cash instead of going home to have their siesta to make up for the short night rest they always have.

Sleep affect your physical and mental health tremendously, Lack of sleep really affects your metabolism, mood, concentration, stress levels and immune system among other things.

Getting that 8+ hours sleep every night helps heal, repair and rejuvenate your body for the next day’s task. So you will be able to stand properly in class and teach the students.

8. Stay active outside the gym

Gym is the general place people go to lose weight or stay in shape but it doesn’t just end there, there are so many exercise you can do that wouldn’t require you heading to the gym. For instance, walking, you want to get something down the street ?

Walk. Want to go visit a friend living within a walking distance or a home? Leave the car at home and walk. Instead of taking the elevator you take the stairs, engage in outdoor and school activities like biking, swimming, running etc.

9. Reduce your soda intake

You’d be amazed at the amount of calories available in just three gulps of your favorite soda. Not only does it contain a lot of calories, it also contains a lot of sugar which gives diabetes, so instead of taking that favourite soda, slice up a couple of fruits and make a smoothie which is much more nutritious and healthy than a soda. Leave the soda for your students who have enough play time to burn those calories.

10. It is your body and only you can make the change

Lastly, learn to love your body and yourself, and acknowledge how hard you’re trying to live a healthy life as teacher. Trust me, your students don’t care how you look, if you are sexy or not. Your fellow colleagues might have a thing or two to say buy no matter who encourages you or advices you to live a healthier life it all boils down to your decision to get off your office get rid of all the junks and make a change.

As a teacher, take that step towards living a healthier life today and you’ll be glad you did in the future.
